Guidelines for Good Eating

I have just finished reading Running for Mortals, by John 'the Penguin' Bingham and his wife, 'Coach' Jenny Hadfield.


I thoroughly enjoyed this book and just read it in about 2 sittings... it is not particularly new, but it has some really good information in it and one of the chapters that really hit home with me was about running and weight loss.

I have been watching my weight for years.... you would probably call me obsessive.  But aside from that little thing, I found this list of guidelines very helpful, and sensible. 

Maybe you will too...

  • Watch for empty calories that you mindlessly consume.
  • Be aware of portion size.
  • Start your day with a balanced breakfast.
  • Include healthy snacks throughout the day and between meals.
  • Watch for persistent low-level eating - popcorn at the movies, potato chips in front of the television.
  • Get the good foods in first.
  • Think of food as fuel.
  • Make sure you can see your food. (No hiding your broccoli under cheese sauce.)
  • Be aware of your fantasy food myths like these: broken cookies have no calories; it doesn't count if you eat it standing up. 
  • Figure out what triggers your desire for food.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Remember that every day is a day to start over.

  1. These are great guidelines! Some of them are hard to stick to, especially when you love chips and popcorn! Thanks for the reminder!

  2. YES! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!! As you know, I am struggling with my weight and getting back on track right now. I want to READ THIS BOOK! My mom was a huge fan of John B. and I am reading the Courage to Start right now, but I am not very far into it. I am totally adding this to my list of must-reads.

  3. this sounds like a great book! I have actually never heard of it and really want to check it out. I like the "think of running as fuel" tip...so often I think "no...i don't need those calories"...then I get so angry at myself because I know I need the FUEL to help get me through the tough runs! Thank you for posting this!

  4. Oh, thanks for posting this. I am always on the look out for better ways to help with my nutrition. I am a bit obsessed too...Haha!
